Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg was subjected to gender discrimination during her entire professional career. This was true at Stanford University as well. Esther never received tenure at Stanford. Esther's title at Stanford University was that of "Adjunct Research Professor", and she was lucky to get it because she was the only woman to receive it. (This is discussed at length under "Gender Discrimination".) Esther's appointment was coterminous with her obtaining her own research grants (so that her position would not cost Stanford anything). Threatened with the possible loss of her appointment, Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza and others wrote recommendations in support of Esther. This letter was one such recommendation.
